Oncology Service Definitions

Hydration is an IV infusion that consists of pre-packaged fluid and electrolytes. Hydration refers strictly to the replacement of fluids. Hydration infusions generally entail less patient risk monitoring than either chemotherapy or therapeutic infusions.

Chemotherapy is the parental administration of non-radionuclide anti-neoplastic drugs for cancer diagnosis, anti-neoplastic agents provided for treatment of non-cancer diagnosis or to substances such as monoclonal antibody agents, and other biologic response modifiers.

Blood Transfusion is the process of transferring blood or blood-based products from one person into another person via the circulatory system.

Antibiotic Therapy is an intravenous infusion of a drug used to treat infections by killing or preventing the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. In some cancer treatment regimens (i.e. chemotherapy, radiation therapy), antibiotics are administered pre-treatment to bolster the body's immune system and/or post-treatment to prevent infections and help support the production of new white blood cells (i.e. replacing the white blood cells lost or damaged during treatment).

Physician Office Visits are by a Board Certified Oncologist.
